Welcome to Crescent City, California.
It is named after the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,006. Crescent City is located in extreme northern California, just 20 miles from the Oregon border. This pristine area is an outdoor lover's dream! Along the sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean, Crescent City sits on a stretch of forested flatland, near where Point St. George juts into the ocean. A few miles to the east the coastal mountains abruptly begin their steep climb to 5000 foot peaks. Several miles north of Crescent City the Smith River emerges from its steep-walled canyon and flows into the ocean. Further north and south the coastal mountains close in on this isolated lowland, dropping straight into the ocean.
Crescent City is within close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the Redwood National and State Parks, the Smith River and Klamath Rivers, and the Smith River National Recreational Area. Unparalleled beauty abounds in this area where "the redwoods meet the sea," making it a place you will want to visit more than once!
Some of the activities available in Crescent City are hiking, biking, kayaking, surfing, and camping. You can fish for salmon and steelhead October through February, and go whale-watching December through March. The wild and wonderful Smith River Gorge is just a short 15-minute drive from Crescent City, and offers great white water rafting! Spring is gorgeous in Crescent City and is a wonderful time for wildflower and wildlife viewing. Or, simply sit back and listen to the sound of the waves - you can't go wrong in Crescent City. Other interesting attractions in the area are the Del Norte County Museum, the Lighthouse Museum and the St. George's Reef and Battery Point lighthouses. Temperatures are mild year round, so plan your vacation to this land of natural beauty anytime of the year!
